The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ancientmarinersct.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ancient Mariner Chanteymen <\/a>used to sing it often and once, during a performance, one of the Ancient Mariners drummers (Todd Kennedy) made the quip in my ear &#8220;<em>and if you see a sailin&#8217; ship it might bite yer ass!&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0 I was <em>quite<\/em> amused and began to tease that line into our Monday night shows where it caught like a brush fire and took on a life of it&#8217;s own, bleeding over into other venues, usually reserved for the very last chorus and its repeat &#8211; I&#8217;m so <em>very<\/em> sorry, Tom!<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/thejovialcrew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/london_875K.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2157\" alt=\"london_875K\" src=\"https:\/\/thejovialcrew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/london_875K-241x300.jpg\" width=\"241\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thejovialcrew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/london_875K-241x300.jpg 241w, https:\/\/thejovialcrew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/london_875K-823x1024.jpg 823w, https:\/\/thejovialcrew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/london_875K-624x776.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My father often told me, when I was just a lad,<br \/>\nA sailor&#8217;s life was very hard, the food was always bad,<br \/>\nBut now I&#8217;ve joined the navy, I&#8217;m on board a man-o-war,<br \/>\nAnd now I find a sailor ain&#8217;t a sailor any more!<\/p>\n<p>Chorus:<br \/>\n<strong><em>Don&#8217;t haul on the rope, don&#8217;t climb up the mast,<br \/>\nIf you see a sailing-ship it might be your last,<br \/>\nGet your &#8216;civvies ready for another run-ashore,<br \/>\nA sailor ain&#8217;t a sailor, ain&#8217;t a sailor any more!<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nThe &#8216;killick&#8217; of our mess, he says we&#8217;ve had it soft,<br \/>\nIt wasn&#8217;t like this in his day, when he was up aloft,<br \/>\nWe like our bunks and sleeping-bags but what&#8217;s a hammock for?<br \/>\nSwinging from the deckhead or lying on the floor?<\/p>\n<p>They gave us an engine that first went up and down,<br \/>\nThen with more technology the engine went around,<br \/>\nWe&#8217;re good with steam and diesel but what&#8217;s a mainyard for?<br \/>\nA stoker ain&#8217;t a stoker with a shovel any more!<\/p>\n<p>They gave us an Aldiss Lamp, we can do it right,<br \/>\nThey gave us a radio, we signal day and night,<br \/>\nWe know our codes and ciphers but what&#8217;s a &#8216;sema&#8217; for?<br \/>\nA &#8216;bunting-tosser&#8217; doesn&#8217;t toss the bunting any more!<\/p>\n<p>They gave us a radar set to pierce the fog and gloom,<br \/>\nSo now the lookout&#8217;s sitting in a tiny darkened room,<br \/>\nLoran does navigation the Sonar says how deep,<br \/>\nThe Jimmy&#8217;s 3 sheets to the wind, the Skipper&#8217;s fast asleep.<\/p>\n<p>Two cans of beer a day, that&#8217;s your bleeding lot!<br \/>\nBut now we gets an extra two because they stopped The Tot,<br \/>\nSo, we&#8217;ll put on our civvy-clothes and find a pub ashore,<br \/>\nA sailor&#8217;s still a sailor, just like he was before!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a wonderful ditty written by the even more wonderful Tom Lewis.\u00a0 It has taken on a life of its own&#8230;
