{"id":2175,"date":"2014-06-08T19:11:13","date_gmt":"2014-06-08T23:11:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thejovialcrew.com\/?page_id=2175"},"modified":"2021-10-22T08:31:12","modified_gmt":"2021-10-22T12:31:12","slug":"the-mermaid","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/thejovialcrew.com\/?page_id=2175","title":{"rendered":"The Mermaid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This song is well known to both the Irish and Sea music genres, such groups as\u00a0The Clancy Brothers having recorded it.\u00a0 It is listed as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Mermaid_(Child_Ballad)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Child Ballad #289 <\/a>and believed to date from around the mid-18th century&#8230; The earliest version in my own collection is from John Ashton&#8217;s 1891 book &#8220;Real Sailor&#8217;s Songs&#8221;.\u00a0 It points out the supposed sailor&#8217;s superstition of 1) leaving port on a Friday, and 2) seeing a mermaid, both of which foretell doom.\u00a0 However, many&#8217;s the vessel that sailed from port on a Friday with no consequence&#8230; but how many sailors survived to tell of seeing a mermaid combing her hair while gazing into a looking glass??<\/p>\n<p>More detailed insight on the history of this song is <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.loc.gov\/folklife\/2018\/05\/the-mermaid\/\">through this link<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tim sings a version that has a slight variation from what is below, and there are many other versions besides.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Jos.
