This is a short-haul chantey most often sung by Mike.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>It was collected from \u201cDick\u201d Maitland, a resident of Sailor\u2019s <\/span>Snug<\/span>Harbor<\/span>, by William Main Doerflinger and published in his book \u201cSongs of the Sailor and Lumberman\u201d.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>There are many variations which abound; Tim\u2019s is below.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>We are indeed aware that Napoleon was first exiled to the Italian <\/span>island<\/span> of <\/span>Elba<\/span>, but escaped in 1815, returned to power, lost this next war and was <\/span>then<\/span><\/i> exiled to Ste-Helena\u2026 But folk songs do not always reflect history accurately!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Dick Maitland commented on it \u2013 \u201c<\/span>On British ships this was usually sung in sort of a jeering tone \u2013 as you know, the British and the French never did get on well together!<\/span><\/i>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The song is, as most work songs, meant to be sung at a slow tempo, with the pull by the hands when they utter the words \u201c<\/span>yah!<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u201d and again on the syllable \u201c<\/span>\u00e7ois!<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u201d, but when Tim presents it at our venues, he performs it as really all chanteys are performed for a tavern setting \u2013 up tempo for the audience.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
