{"id":3030,"date":"2014-12-08T12:19:04","date_gmt":"2014-12-08T16:19:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thejovialcrew.com\/?page_id=3030"},"modified":"2018-02-26T10:04:40","modified_gmt":"2018-02-26T14:04:40","slug":"the-gloucestershire-wassail","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/thejovialcrew.com\/?page_id=3030","title":{"rendered":"The Gloucestershire Wassail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wassailing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wassail songs <\/a>are associated with Christmastide, the\u00a0new year, through &#8220;Twelfth Night&#8221;\u00a0&#8211; the word &#8220;wassail&#8221; comes from the Anglo-Saxon &#8220;wes hal&#8221;, or &#8220;be whole&#8221; is in &#8220;good health!&#8221; as a greeting or even a toast.\u00a0 Much like we think of Christmas carolers, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gloschristmas.com\/wassail\/gloucestershire-wassail-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wassailers travel from house to house singing,<\/a> carrying their wassail cups which<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wassail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> the hosts were expected to fill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Gloucestershire Wassail dates back to the turn of the 18th century as far as can be ascertained; it appears in print the first time in England&#8217;s &#8220;Times Telescope&#8221; of 1813 although it was of earlier origin rather than being composed for that paper.\u00a0 This is a version of that song.<\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t really sing holiday songs much anymore for our usual venues don&#8217;t seem to have the patience for it&#8230; or are avoiding holiday songs!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Jos.
