{"id":5053,"date":"2018-08-24T11:36:56","date_gmt":"2018-08-24T15:36:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thejovialcrew.com\/?page_id=5053"},"modified":"2018-08-24T11:36:56","modified_gmt":"2018-08-24T15:36:56","slug":"rolling-home-to-old-new-england","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/thejovialcrew.com\/?page_id=5053","title":{"rendered":"Rolling Home to Old New England"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This song is difficult to date for there have been several people who claim it as their composition and yet it can be found in one version or another dating to the mid-1800s.\u00a0 It can be found in such books as &#8220;American Sea Songs &amp; Chanteys&#8221; c.1948, &#8220;Oxford Book of Sea Songs&#8221; c.1986,\u00a0 &#8220;Iron Men and Wooden Ships&#8221; c. 1924, &#8220;Shantymen and Shantyboys&#8221; c.1951.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The text was originally a poem composed by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Mackay_(author)\">Charles Mackay<\/a> on 26 May 1858; while homeward bound from America as a passenger on the Europa. Stan Hugill, who calls it &#8216;the most famous homeward-bound song of them all&#8217;&#8230;Used both at the pumps and the capstan.\u00a0 It was easily added to and bent to the desires of the singer, thus &#8220;Rolling Home To Dear Old England&#8221;, &#8220;&#8230;Merry Old England&#8221;, &#8220;&#8230; &#8220;Old Caledonia&#8221;, &#8220;&#8230; Dear Old Ireland&#8221;, &amp;c, &amp;c, &amp;c.\u00a0 \u00a0The melody bears a marked resemblance to the tune used for the Irish rebel dirge &#8220;Kevin Barry&#8221; dated to 1920.<\/p>\n<p>The version below is how it is presented by Paul and by Tim.\u00a0 For a long version, I suggest this <a href=\"https:\/\/mudcat.org\/thread.cfm?threadid=51635\">link to Mudcat<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Jos.
