{"id":6206,"date":"2023-08-15T17:28:19","date_gmt":"2023-08-15T21:28:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thejovialcrew.com\/?page_id=6206"},"modified":"2024-08-21T20:49:57","modified_gmt":"2024-08-22T00:49:57","slug":"a-pint-of-old-peculier","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/thejovialcrew.com\/?page_id=6206","title":{"rendered":"A Pint of Old Peculier"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Theakston_Brewery\"><strong>OLD PECULIER<\/strong> <\/a>is a grand drinking song composed in 1979 by the late <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120208134020\/http:\/\/www.cockersdale.com\/PAGEKEITH.HTML\">Keith Marsden<\/a> (d. 1991).\u00a0 Although I&#8217;ve heard a friend or associate here and there sing this song, I finally decided to learn it from the singing of John Patcai.\u00a0 Old Peculier is a rather famous beer from North Yorkshire, England (note the spelling of the beer name).\u00a0 It was made especially known here in the US by the singing of <a href=\"https:\/\/dickholdstock.com\/projects\/\">Dick Holdstock and Alan MacLeod<\/a>, with their classic two-voice English singing style.\u00a0 Keith had begun a band named <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120208133912\/http:\/\/www.cockersdale.com\/\">Cockersdale<\/a> which still sings today.<\/p>\n<p>It must be said that while there is a fervent desire to make a connection between a favourite song and a preferred historical setting, this is a song from the 20th century &#8220;in the old style&#8221; and NOT from the 18th century&#8230; I have heard at least one performer at a historical setting assert that it comes from the 18th century, and it has been taken up by a &#8220;pirate&#8221; group or two at Renaissance Faires.\u00a0 Lovely that they would sing it, but it&#8217;s important to relate the origins of every song accurately.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Jos.
