{"id":714,"date":"2013-08-20T08:35:29","date_gmt":"2013-08-20T12:35:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thejovialcrew.com\/?page_id=714"},"modified":"2018-02-26T10:15:37","modified_gmt":"2018-02-26T14:15:37","slug":"the-hog-eye-man","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/thejovialcrew.com\/?page_id=714","title":{"rendered":"The Hog-Eye Man"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This song was a pumping chantey although Stan Hugill wrote that it was more popular as a &#8220;stamp and go&#8221; capstan chantey, much like &#8220;What Do You Do With A Drunken Sailor&#8221;.\u00a0 This song is an example of many that crossed into use on land either as a work song in the cotton fields or at work along the railways.\u00a0 A &#8220;navvy&#8221; was a term applied to sailors who found work on the railways when unable to find it at sea.\u00a0 The older version of the song does not refer to a navvy but instead uses a racist term I prefer not to perpetuate in cases such as these.<\/p>\n<p>We used to\u00a0sing it far too up-tempo for a real work song, for the sake of the crowd.\u00a0 Of late we&#8217;ve taken inspiration by the singing of John Roberts, slowing the speed down a bit and adding instrumentation.\u00a0 Verses 3 and\u00a08 were composed by Joseph one evening on the fly many years ago; they were written down and stuck.\u00a0 Verse\u00a06 came from a bawdy poem often recited by a long time friend of ours, Mark Bosse.\u00a0 There are certainly many more verses, some old, some new.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Jos.
