St-Patrick’s Day

Well here begins the season!  This coming Monday the 7th we have (so we’ve come to understand) a “slew of birthdays” including for our delectable twins.  Then Sunday the 13th – “Parade Day” for New Haven, we’ll be at Cafe Nine again – 4-6p!  Come on down!  No cover charge this time!

Monday the 14th we won’t be at the Gris – because of St-Pat’s day we’ve traded with the usual Thursday night group – The Dizzy River Band!  Instead,  on Thursday we’ll be in the Covered Bridge Room, 6:30 to 10:00 or so.  Trust me… If you want to be seated for this make a reservation!  It fills in very quickly!  860.767.1776

The Passing of Bill Winterer

Bill Winterer

Bill Winterer was the man who hired Cliff back in ’72 and thus created the Monday night landmark we know and love today.  In ’86, when Paul, Howard, and Joseph were just regular guests in support of Cliff, Bill was delighted and encouraged the formation into The Jovial Crew – the regular Monday night band.  He oversaw Monday nights for years and even stuck around a bit when he sold the Gris to the Paul Brothers.  The following was borrowed from the Facebook page of the Griswold Inn…

<< Last night The Griswold Inn lost an important figure in our history… and a good friend. William G. Winterer, Griswold Inn owner and Innkeeper from 1972-1995, passed away peacefully at his home in Boca Grande, Florida. Bill was born July 7, 1934 in St Louis and, following graduation from the Havard Business School and a career on Wall Street, purchased the ‘Gris’ from the Lovell Family, ownersand Innkeepers for three generations. It was sailing that brought Bill and his wife, Vicki, to Essex where they fell in love with the community and its venerable maritime landmark, The Griswold Inn. For twenty four years they devoted tireless energy to the business and also our community, while at the same time raising a wonderful family. Bill chaired the Board of the Ivoryton Playhouse and served on numerous boards including theGoodspeed Opera House, the USS Constitution Museum, the National Maritime Historical Society. Importantly, Bill was the driving force behind the founding of the Connecticut River Museum in Essex. For those of us at the ‘Gris’, we feel his presence everyday in the numerous legacies he has left behind. And while he brought many new traditions that our friends and patrons continue to enjoy today, we are most grateful to Bill and Vicki for preserving the past and their careful stewardship of this special place. We will miss you Bill. >>

Winter Storm Plans

As thing stand by 1:30 this afternoon, the Griswold Inn (860.767.1776) will be open this evening and we will be there to do our usual show!  Depending on how the roads are will affect how many of us will be there, but if you’re in the neighbourhood do pop in and spend some of this chilly, snowy day with us!  If you travel further and the roads are dicey, please do stay home and be safe!

Groundhog Day!!

What… again???

Groundhog-Playing-a-Saxophone--91969By the time you appear in town for the Gris, Essex Edwina should be at her post at the town’s “silent policeman” and you’ll pass her as you make your way down to join us for another installment in our Sea Music evenings.  The parade will have already happened and hopefully she’ll still be there.  But we’ll be there, at least in part, and if you’re in town come down a pint or two and join us!

Preparing for winter storm Jonas

Don’t despair!  The storm is already expected to be less than they had thought merely a day ago!  And that aside, it won’t affect Monday but for messy sidewalks!  Beer/rum/wine, the fire in the hearth, and good camaraderie is what you need!

St-Pats Benefit for the New Haven Parade

So this coming Saturday the 16th, we’re playing at Café Nine (on the corner of State and Crown streets) in New Haven – the objective, to raise funds for the city’s St-Patrick’s Day parade.  We’ll arrive to set up around 8:00, the show begins around 9:30 with the band Buzz Gordo’s Ski Lodge and then we’ll do a couple of sets.  It’s a bar, so only 21 and older, please.  Come on down, all our fans from the New Haven area – this is another opportunity to participate with us on your home turf!  Check the flier here for details.

Flashback Christmas

Oh Griswold Tree, Oh Griswold TreeGriswold Tree
Upon the coal stove eternally.
Oh Griswold Tree, Oh Griswold Tree
A relic from antiquity
For Christmastide and St-Patrick’s spray
For Mother’s and for Groundhog Day
Oh Griswold Tree, Oh Griswold Tree
In every tap room photo be!
